About us

Kwahu Jejeti and Its Development Committee

Our town

Kwahu Jejeti is a farming community in the Kwahu West Municipality of Ghana's Eastern Region, near Asuoso, in the green lowlands below the Kwahu ridge. It is part of the wider Kwahu traditional area, whose people are known across Ghana for their farming, trade and enterprise.

Our people grow cocoa and food crops, process cassava and palm fruit, keep fish ponds and trade along the main road that passes through the area. The town is home to the Kwahu Jejeti Presby Basic School and to families whose roots here go back generations.

Much of our history lives in the memory of our elders. Recording that history, carefully and with the families who hold it, is one of the committee's first tasks.

The Development Committee

The Kwahu Jejeti Development Committee works within the Office of the Tufuhene, under the authority of the palace. It gives the town one organized place to plan, raise resources and see projects through from idea to completion.

  • Plan the town's 1-year, 10-year and 20-year comprehensive plans
  • Design and propose development projects the community needs most
  • Seek donations and support from citizens, the diaspora and partners
  • Deliver together through cooperative planning and implementation with every stakeholder
  • Account openly to the palace and the people for every gift received

A board drawn from every part of the community guides the committee's work.

Heritage · Market · Education · Sustainability

Our Development Agenda

Seven pillars guide the work of the committee. We are organizing ourselves first, then inviting partners to join a town that is serious about its future.

Pillar 1

Palace Dignity and Town Image

The palace grounds are the symbolic center of Kwahu Jejeti. Before we ask others to respect our town, our town must show order, cleanliness and pride.

  • Clean and define the palace frontage
  • Signage from the main approaches
  • Shaded gathering space with seating
  • A public notice board for development news
Pillar 2

Kwahu Jejeti Food and Farm Market

A planned market day for our farmers and processors that grows, step by step, into a permanent market.

  • Palm oil, gari, cassava dough, vegetables, eggs, fish and poultry
  • Stalls, water, drainage, toilets and storage
  • Value addition: packaging, branding, cassava peel into animal feed
  • A farmers' and processors' cooperative
Pillar 3

Annual Heritage and Development Festival

A new festival that celebrates who we are and raises support for what we are building.

  • Durbar, thanksgiving and homecoming
  • Food and farm exhibition
  • Oral history session with our elders
  • Tree planting, clean-up and a development forum
Pillar 4

University Partnership for Sustainable Development

We are exploring a partnership through which university students and faculty, including from Towson University, may study and support sustainable development in Kwahu Jejeti.

  • Community mapping and planning
  • Waste, food systems and tree planting studies
  • Youth surveys and market layout ideas
Pillar 5

Sanitation and Solid Waste

A clean town is the first change everyone can see.

  • Monthly Clean Jejeti Day
  • Agreed waste collection points
  • A youth sanitation team
  • Composting of farm and food waste
Pillar 6

One Citizen, One Tree

A planned greening of the town, with every tree placed on a simple green map and cared for.

  • Shade and fruit trees at the palace, schools and roadsides
  • Trees at the market site and gathering places
  • A community tree nursery
Pillar 7

Education and a Future Senior High School

Support for our schools now, and a careful study of a senior high or technical school to serve Kwahu Jejeti and nearby towns.

  • Count our students and the distance to existing schools
  • Identify land and gather support
  • Engage the Assembly and Ghana Education Service
